Things you learn at an outdoor concert

August 25, 2008

lakewood

You’re ten years above mean age, and in a pensive mood at a Jack Johnson concert at Lakewood Amphitheatre about 10 days ago.   One of Jack’s albums lives in your iPod, but you’re not (what, in radio, they call) a “P1″ of his music, so you’re familiarizing yourself with just what kind of crowd he pulls.  You’re on the lawn, overlooking a milkyway of cellphone screens that stretches wall-to-wall all the way to the stage. The place is PACKED,…must be twenty-thousand people there. At any given moment, about one in eight people is thumbing a message to a friend,  but you notice that the more popular the song he plays, the fewer cell lights you see smattered about the crowd.  Then the nanosecond Jack slips into a deeper, less familiar cut, a collective ADD grips the group and the blue hued screens explode like microwave popcorn at about the 2-minute mark.

Speaking of big crowds and outdoor concerts, we hope you’ll use all the technology at your disposal to invite everybody you know to join the DejaBlue Grass Band and Farmland Band on Saturday, September 6th at Pullman Yard in Kirkwood.   Farmland Band starts at 7:30 and we go on after them.  It’s a funky cool new outdoor venue, and we want to pull a huge crowd to get it off to a good start.  We’re working on LOTS of fresh new original material and this is going to be a special show!!  It’s an all ages show, only $5 a head and it’s BYOB.  Please come join us!

Sights and Sounds of the DjBGB!

August 18, 2008

The DejaBlue Grass Band’s segment on “Georgia Gazette” aired on Friday, and then again twice today (Monday8/18)!! Kudos to Edgar Treiguts who did a fabulous job! It was a great experience. (GPB listeners may be interested to know that Edgar is an accomplished musician in his own right, having studied classical violin…we’ve asked him to come practice with us. Can you imagine a song or two with twin fiddles?!!? Be still my musical heart. Mark, Joey, Keith, and I sat down with Edgar a couple of weeks ago for this interview. If we play our cards right, we’re gonna do a live show in their studio sooner rather than later.

You can listen to the interview at the -8:35 mark of this podcast. (Click on 8/15 version of Georgia Gazette)

Also, I believe the “live” broadcast on CBS Atlanta’s “Better Mornings” will finally air tomorrow (8/19) between 6:15 and 6:30AM. I’ll try and capture it and put it up on the website.

Pigs kin

August 8, 2008

DjBGB with John Willingham at Ribs, Etc.

I get a kick outta the ubiquitous smiling pig icon at barbecue joints. Not an original observation by any means, but a cruel irony for sure….but as you can see from the picture, Ribs, Etc. has more than their share of pig paraphernalia.

Thanks to the DejaBlueCrue who came out last night. It was fun playing with one of our homeboys, Johnny-Be-Willingham. Good little crowd. Loose gig. We had six of us crammed around one single mic last night. We were shuffling in and out like redneck folklorico.

I walked in before the gig to find Keith tazmanian-deviling some ‘cue. That swine never had a chance. I told him to stop when he got to the crunchy part…that’s the plate. Been there, myself before. “Ribs” is some of the better ‘cue in the ATL. And I know good cue…my home state has more barbecue joints per capita than any state in the union. “Ribs” serves up a mean 420 on tap, too. Good people over there. Go see’um.

Keith musta gotten some pig juice on those fingers cause he greased up solo after slip slidin’ solo. Not a better fiddler in these parts, I guar-own-tee. We debuted a new tune that Todd brought to the band called “Steel Rail Rider” originally done (if my Google skills didn’t fail me) by Junior Sisk. It’s a keeper.

We’re working from now till Sunday, Sept 7th on original material and tightening up a hard set of music. We open that night for a fantastic band out of Chicago called “Cornmeal” at Smith’s Olde Bar. We need to be on our game that night. Hope you’ll come out!

DejaBlue Grass Band at Ribs, Etc. tomorrow night

August 6, 2008

Ribs, Etc.
Don’t cost nuthin’. Get your rib on wiff us. We’ll be playing tomorrow night (Thursday, 8/7) with the flat pickin’ freak known as John Willingham at Ribs, Etc. on Roswell Road in Buckhead. Been a while since we’ve gigged, and John gets orn’ry when he goes too long without good ‘cue. He told me he got so hungry one time, he ate a pig….oh, wait, nevermind. Mark only eats spouts and bean curd, so there’s more ‘cue for me and you.

Come join us! Johnny-fast-fingers and the DjBGB get started at 8PM.
